Portrait of a Red-tail

Bodega Bay

2024

1/160sec at ƒ/7.1, ISO 160

During a mid-afternoon summer day in Bodega Bay, I viewed this red-tailed hawk after photographing the abundant species of waterfowl present. I was traveling along a backroad known for its beautiful views of the bay hillsides. I previously had seen red-tails along this road, but often, they were perched on telephone wires too elevated to capture a detailed portrait. Contrastingly, this red-tail was perched lower on a nearby fencepost. The lower lookout spot, in conjunction with that day’s overcast sky, allowed for the photographic detail present in this image.
