Calla Lily
Bodega Bay
2024
1/800sec at ƒ/7.1, ISO 100
Commonly encountered in coastal regions of California, calla lilies grow naturally as an invasive species. Native to South Africa, the calla lily, Zantedeschia aethiopica, is often cultivated as an ornamental plant, causing its usage in gardens and landscaping to initialize and further the spread of this flower. This calla lily was captured at peak bloom growing on the side of a Bodega Bay backroad. I Photographed it utilizing chiaroscuro lighting techniques to highlight the delicacy of the bloom, bringing your eye directly to the pollen of the brightly lit flower. This effect is achieved by choosing a naturally brightly lit bloom where, at a higher aperture, the true colors of the flower are still present whilst removing its background and enhancing its perceived depth.
