Douglas' Ground Squirrels

San Pablo National Wildlife Refuge

2023

1/100sec at ƒ/7.1, ISO 100

The month preceding the photograph of these ground squirrels, I observed Western Kingbirds at San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge. My focus in returning to the refuge was not to capture the squirrels I had seen on many other occasions around the Bay Area but to try to capture birds I'd uniquely seen at the refuge. While looking through and around the eucalyptus trees I had previously viewed Kingbirds perched in, I noticed a pair of squirrels in deserted remnants of fencing. I shifted my goals to capturing the dignified California ground squirrels. The depth of the image differs from much of my work, which is currently primarily focused on the complexity of light. Still, depth is the primary contributor to the intrigue of this image.
